Karystos - Evia Greece
Located at a distance of 128km from the town of Halkida is the southern
Evia port of Karystos. This charming and very picturesque town has
been known since the ancient years, and has a very interest and
rich history, with many monuments showing the power and importance
of Karystos during the history of Greece. |
Karystos was built in the shade of the Ohi mountain,
and within the famous cape of "Kavo DOro".
It is a very modern town, offering visitors all of the expected
comforts and services, and also has many interesting sites and places
where you can enjoy both fun and relaxing moments.
The town combines perfectly the sea and mountains, creating a very
unique and charming environment. With the many mineral spring fountains,
rich and luschious vegetation, crystal clear waters and lovely sandy

Visitors to the area can visit the impressive Venetian Castle
"Castello Rooso Kokkinokastro", which was built in the
13th century. You can also enjoy lovely panoramic views from the
citadel of the ancient town. The "Yokalio Archaeological
Museum" exhibits a wonderful selection of objects and findings
from around the area, whilsts one can visit the "Deligiorgi
Folklore Museum" as well.
Situated at the east side of the port is "Bourtsi",
a Venetian two storey fortress, that was built between 1200 and
1300. The building matierals of this fortress were actually marble
that was taken from an ancient temple.
With it's perfect location within the cape and under the mountain,
Karystos is an ideal accommodation base, and from here, one can
venture out and explore some of the other regions in Southern
Evia, as well as enjoy some of the many day trips and excursions
that take place often.
Worth visiting is the charming ravine of "Dimosaris",
which starts at the top cliff of "Youda", and ends up
all the way down to the Aegean side, approximately a distance
of 10km. There are also some very nice neighbouring villages that
one can visit, which offer lovely scenery and landscapes filled
with greenery and colourful flowers and vegetation.
There is also a wine festival that takes place every year, as
well as book exhibitions, theatre productions, song and dance
evenings, and several others to which everyone is invitied.
Karystos is a very charming and beautiful town on Evia, and one
